    HISTORY OF CHATRA

Chatra is one of the twenty-four districts in the state of Jharkhand, India. It was established in 1991 after being separated from Hazaribagh district. Chatra serves as the administrative headquarters of the district and covers an area of 3,718 square kilometers.
    Ancient Period
In ancient times, the area now known as Chatra and its neighboring regions were governed by several states collectively referred to as the Atavika (forest) states. These states were under the influence of the Maurya Empire during the reign of Ashoka (around 232 BCE). Samudragupta, while traveling through the Chotanagpur region, launched the first attack against the kingdom of Dakshina Kosala in the Mahanadi valley.

    About Judgeship

The Judgeship of Chatra was established on 16th June 2001 and inaugurated by Mr. Justice V. K. Gupta, the then Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court, with Sri G. K. Verma serving as its first District & Sessions Judge. A new 22-court building was later inaugurated on 18th June 2011 by Mr. Justice Prakash Tatia, then Acting Chief Justice, inspired by the vision of Mr. Justice R. R. Prasad. Since its inception, the Judgeship has seen 12 District/Principal District Judges.

Significant reforms include the establishment of the DLSA (District Legal Services Authority) and the implementation of the CIS (Case Information System), improving accessibility for litigants. The Legal Assistant Defense Counsel system now offers support to the defense, and modern electronic systems for submitting court fees and challans have been adopted. Despite challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Judgeship continues to adapt and is progressively reducing the number of pending cases, striving toward a “Five Plus Free” case status.
